Act 5, Scene 3: Consequences of Actions

Prompt A

Just as the two families, Capulet and Montague, do not realize the possible consequences of their feud until it is too late, Jacob, a character in the movie The Returned is grief stricken when he realizes what his actions have done.  He steals the medicine that is needed as a daily dose to keep one of the main characters, Alex, from turning into a zombie.  He does this because his wife also needs the medicine and refuses to give Alex even one of the doses.  Later that day, Alex's wife, Kate, is forced to shoot him because he turns into a zombie.  Because of what Jacob has done and how easily he could have kept his friend alive, he is miserable.  Similarly, the fighting between the Capulet family and Montague family results in the death of Romeo and Juliet because of the issues and misunderstandings that come up from their love for each other that is not allowed.  Lord Capulet and Lord Montague realize what their actions have caused only when they see Romeo and Juliet dead.

Act 2, Scene 2: Juliet's Worries

Prompt E

The relationship between Romeo and Juliet is not completely trusting. Juliet has been taught that men are not always trusting and may lie in order to seduce women. Because Romeo has already heard that she loves him, she is worried that he will take advantage of her. She makes it clear that she believes this when she says that, "Yet if thou swear'st, Thou mayst prove false. At lovers' perjuries, Then say, Jove laughs." She says how the gods laugh at the promises that lovers make. Then, she explains what she needs him to do, which is that, "If thou dost love, pronounce it faithfully: Or if thou think'st I am too quickly won, I'll frown and be perverse an say thee nay." Juliet is clearly cautious and worried about this relationship and what will happen, while Romeo is willing to do anything to be with her.

Act 1, Scene 1: Romeo in Love

Prompt C
When Romeo is talking to Benvolio, he says "Tut, I have lost myself.  I am not here.  This is not Romeo.  He's some other where."  This line helps show the extent to which Romeo is in love with Rosaline because he no longer feels like he is himself.  He clearly does not know very much about love, which is shown by him being changed by someone and not knowing what to do with himself because of it.  It explains why he has been shutting himself in his room during the day and always isolating himself.  It is very odd that Romeo seems to fall in love so easily.

Love is like a Cliff's Edge

Love is like a Cliff's Edge
by Tess Callan

Love is like a cliff’s edge.
What if a disaster happens?
The ground crumbles,
You slip,
You fall.
And everything is over.

Should you take the risk?
Run to the edge,
Run to see your love,
Dangle your feet carefree,
Feeling relaxed, maybe confident around something as unpredictable as love,
Terrify yourself of falling and making a mistake,
But you find love.

Or should your stay back?
Hiding behind a tree looking on,
You taste the sweetness of love in your mouth,
And you want it so much,
But can’t reach it.
You strain to find it,
Not being able to.
You receive nothing;
Just to be safe.

So, do you take the risk?
