Act 5 Scene 3: Trying to Tell the Truth

PROMPT B
Ask 5 interesting questions about the reading OR address 5 questions to one or more of the characters from this section of the reading, as if you were interviewing him or her. Here is an example of a student responding to this prompt for Hamlet. Remember, just ask; you do not have to answer!

Why do they always fight to the death when they can just wound each other until the other is unable to battle? Romeo does not always fight with the intent to kill.

Why does Paris ask his page to warn him if someone is coming?
Does he expect someone to be coming?
Is he not allowed to visit his wife's grave?

Why is Balthazar always holding suspicions against his master Romeo?

He seems like a sketchy character, he is there when he starts the first brawl in act 1, when he tells Romeo that Juliet is dead, and when he gives up Romeo's letter to his father to use as evidence as to see what happened in the tomb. He also disobeys Romeo's orders when Romeo tells him not to look in on what he is doing by Juliet's grave, but he spies anyways, and willingly tells the next person who enters the graveyard.

Why does the Friar continue to help Romeo and Juliet if he has to lie to society?
was he waiting to tell their story or helping them sincerely?
How can they all believe that Juliette is "freshly dead" so quickly?
Her fake death seems like something so supernatural to me!

Act 2 Scene 1: Opposites Attract

PROMPT E
Discuss the relationships between two or more characters. Assert an opinion about the relationship and back it up with some text evidence from the novel. (5-10 sentences).

PROMPT D

Find an image *MUST BE FREE TO USE OR SHARE – CHECK GOOGLE SETTING (photograph, painting, etc.) online that you think is a good symbolic representation of the scene as a whole. Insert the image and then discuss why you chose it and how it represents the scene. (1-3 sentences).
I was thinking of Romeo and Benvolio's unlikely friendship and realized that they are like yin and yang. Total opposites, but they complete each other. Their opposing traits are really shown in Act. 2 Scene 1, when Romeo is off looking for Juliette, because he is in love. He is feeling very emotionally deep and serious. In contrast, Benvolio jokes rather insensitively about Romeo's behavior and what he still believes to be his love for Rosaline. (How funny, auto-correct wants me to change Benvolio to benevolent) Despite the fact that Romeo and Benvolio are complete opposites, somehow they have become good friends. It is clear that Benvolio cares about his friend, because even though he is joking about Romeo's private life, he is looking for his lost friend at night to make sure he is okay before he leaves. He then realizes that Romeo does not want to be found and leads the group away to go home.

Act 1 Scene 5: Resisting Romeo's Romance

PROMPT A
What is happening in the play that reminds you of something that is happening in your life, on TV, in the news, etc. Summarize the issue in the play and in your life in a minimum of 5 sentences.

In scene 5, Juliette's futile attempts to "resist" Romeo from kissing her remind me of my brother's relationship with my cat. Whenever my brother sees my cat looking cute an furry, and wants to pick him up and pet him, he just goes for it, even if the cat is sleeping or was otherwise occupied. This is like how Romeo tries to kiss Juliette's hand despite the fact that she was hinting at him that she did not want that when she tells him "hands are for praying". The cat will then try to tell Riley he does not like what he is doing by scratching at my brother Riley with his paw, but Riley will just go on petting him. This is like Romeo kisses her the second time when she has already resisted, and hints again that she does not want Romeo when she says that her lips just took the sin from his, and he kisses her again anyways. But in both cases, in the end, My cat and Juliette enjoy the petting/the kiss, and remember only good things of their time together and of the other person.

Strong Women

Strong Women
by Kate Griner

My mom
who read to me goodnight moon
proud of my accomplishments
My mom
who has always been there, hardworking
and showed me everything
My mom
who accommodates the ingrate
remaining blind to her support
My mom

My school teacher
who taught me to appreciate
colorful life around me
like Jonas seeing, feeling for the first time
My school teacher
the Giver
of memories; good and bad
My school teacher
who taught me to create
my work to represent me
My school teacher

The dancer
to whom I offered my support
and we bonded
tied together at the pointe shoe
The dancer
who needed me to show her how strong she is
only to aid me the most
The dancer
who showed me personality and passion
the style that incorporates itself into...
The dancer

Me
Hesitating…
I look to the strong women
I see My mom working at home
to whom I can’t divulge
I see My school teacher aiding others
who has no more to teach me
I see The Dancer flowing away
in the river
gone like the wind

I look in
my face looks back at me

I’m not ready yet.
