Act 5, Scene 3

Prompt C

"Here's to my love. Oh true apothecary,
Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die."
Romeo states these lines when he is about to drink the potion and kill himself next to Juliet. I cringed when I read these lines because Juliet is not actually dead! He does not know that she is just sleeping, and will awaken shortly. He has killed himself in the false idea that Juliet is dead, which she is actually not. It is fascinating how one can another human so deeply, to kill himself is he is without her.

Act 3, Scene 5: A Father Daughter Brawl

PROMPT E

In Act 3, Scene 5 Juliet is reminded of her arranged marriage with Paris, a handsome and connected gentleman that was chosen by her family. She refuses, saying she does not want to be married with him. Juliet and her father have an interesting relationship. Before this scene, we have seen Lord Capulet as a calm, pleasant father, until he hears from Juliet how she really feels about the wedding. Lord Capulet is furious, and explodes towards his daughter, threatening to kick her out of the house, and drag her to the wedding himself when he says,
  • "Thank me no thankings, nor proud me no prouds,
  • But fettle your fine joints 'gainst Thursday next
  • To go with Paris to Saint Peter's Church,
  • Or I will drag thee on a hurdle thither.
  • Out, you green-sickness carrion! Out, you baggage!
  • You tallow-face!"
  • She replies,
  • "Good father, I beseech you on my knees,
  • Hear me with patience but to speak a word."
  • Juliet and her father have a dominant relationship. Lord Capulet is very strict, and still treats Juliet like a child, and does not let her make her decisions. Juliet greatly respects her father, and does not want to upset him, however her love for Romeo is too strong. Lord Capulet is very dominant and harsh towards Juliet, while she wishes not to disappoint him, and is greatly effected by his sayings.

Act 2 Scene 5: Everyone is Seeking Answers

Prompt A

In the beginning of scene 5, Juliet has sent the Nurse to see Romeo and confirm the arrangements for their secret marriage. Juliet is waiting impatiently for her return. Her Nurse could potentially be carrying good news, that all is well and Romeo and herself will be married, or that something has gone wrong and Romeo has backed down from their marriage, or others have found out. The Nurse is the person that is on Juliet's mind, and the only person she wants to hear from at the moment. This is relating to my brother and his current situation. He recently applied for a summer engineering internship for a company in the Bay Area. After their interview, the person from the company said that they will reach out to him if he received the job. He has still not heard from them yet, and is impatiently waiting to either receive the good news that he has receive the job, or that he didn't. This is similar to how Juliet is waiting for the Nurse to come and tell her what Romeo has said. These two both are waiting for answers from someone who they are desperately waiting for.

Act 2, Scene 3: Questions to the Characters

Prompt B

Friar Lawrence- Are you willing to secretly wed Romeo and Juliet? Are there major consequences if their families find out about their marriage? Is it crazy to think that Romeo has instantly fallen out of love with Rosaline and into it with Juliet? How valuable do you think their love is?
Romeo: How deeply are you in love to instantly marry Juliet? Are you sure you want to make this big decision so quickly? Do you realize if the others find out, you could get yourself, Juliet, and Friar Lawrence into big trouble?

Act 2 Scene 2 If I were Romeo..

Prompt F

If I were Romeo..

I would do anything to openly express my love for my most valued lover Juliet. My Montague name is restricting me from marrying the love of my life but I must go through with it anyway. Why does this have to be this way? Why has our fate made our love forbidden? I had not seen such beauty until the night I laid my eyes on her. I would do anything to be with her, and I won't let me being a Montague and her a Capulet stop me. What will our parents say? What will our surrounding families react to our love? I could not, and will not care. My love for her is too strong to stop me from being with her, no matter what family we are from. She is who I must be with, and I will never leave her side.

Act 1, Scene 5: The Bond Between Romeo and Juliet

Prompt D

This is a picture of two people hugging. Romeo and Juliet are madly in love with each other, and share a special connection. They know it is a forbidden love because their families are enemies, however they hold on tight to each other. They are deeply in love and don't want to let go of one another, like the couple embracing in this picture.

Gender Inequality

Real men don’t cry. Girls should wear skirts.
Society puts an idea in our heads of what they want to see.
What they know to be true about a certain gender.
A category with characteristics, that all boys and girls have to fit into,
just be be considered “normal.”

Well, what if she has a passion for soccer, or football.
What if she doesn't like the way a skirt brushes against her upper thigh,
or the way mascara on her eyelashes feelings like a cage.
How about if the pigment of deep red lipstick on her lips is like a lock on her voice.
What about if she enjoys the way dirt tingles under her fingernails.
And likes how she can fix up a car in less than a minute.

What if the easiest way for him to unwind, is to light his favorite vanilla scented candle,
and heat his bathtub with steaming water, and immersing its edges with tiny pink bubbles.
Will his manhood be questioned?
Why does his sensitivity, and his softness make him the outcast. Why do kids continuously tell him to “man up.”

We are all tired of being told what we are supposed to do.
What we should wear, and what we should say.
We are all sick of having a common norm being drilled into our confused minds.

Looking into the mirror, the face of your biggest critique stares back at you.
It judges every sharp point, and curve of your imperfect body.

We are the reasons why girls and boys cry themselves to sleep.
We make up the harsh society we live in, and we need to change.

Stop laughing at the boy whose voice is a slightly higher pitch than yours,
or at the girl who doesn’t mask her face with makeup like the rest of them.

We should all be able to live in a world where gender equality exists.
To go about our lives with free and unmasked actions,
not worrying about what others will say.

Because we are all equal. Is it really too hard to accept that?
