Act 2 Scene 2: Exchange by Night

Prompt D

The image of the phoenix rising from the ashes represents the ideals of Romeo and Juliet during the balcony scene.  Juliet tells Romeo, "Romeo, doff they name, And for that which is no part of thee, Take all myself".  She wants Romeo to take off his name, to shed his Montague label, so that he can be with her.  Much like the phoenix, Romeo and Juliet both wish to be reborn so that they can be together.

  1. A very interesting metaphor that matches so well with Romeo's and Juliet's story. The depiction perfectly fits the relationship between Romeo and Juliet.

  2. You compared the two characters to something very interesting. You describe in great detail how the two are alike, and prove that your metaphor makes sense.

  3. This is a really interesting comparison, one I would have never thought of but makes perfect sense. By dropping their names and being reborn, they can "rise from the ashes" of their names which hold them down.

  4. The metaphor you used was very interesting and works well with the situation. Romeo and Juliet feel like their names get in the way of their love. Why do you think it bothers them so much that their families are enemies? It doesn't mean they have to be.
