Act 3, Scene 5: A Father Daughter Brawl

PROMPT E

In Act 3, Scene 5 Juliet is reminded of her arranged marriage with Paris, a handsome and connected gentleman that was chosen by her family. She refuses, saying she does not want to be married with him. Juliet and her father have an interesting relationship. Before this scene, we have seen Lord Capulet as a calm, pleasant father, until he hears from Juliet how she really feels about the wedding. Lord Capulet is furious, and explodes towards his daughter, threatening to kick her out of the house, and drag her to the wedding himself when he says,
  • "Thank me no thankings, nor proud me no prouds,
  • But fettle your fine joints 'gainst Thursday next
  • To go with Paris to Saint Peter's Church,
  • Or I will drag thee on a hurdle thither.
  • Out, you green-sickness carrion! Out, you baggage!
  • You tallow-face!"
  • She replies,
  • "Good father, I beseech you on my knees,
  • Hear me with patience but to speak a word."
  • Juliet and her father have a dominant relationship. Lord Capulet is very strict, and still treats Juliet like a child, and does not let her make her decisions. Juliet greatly respects her father, and does not want to upset him, however her love for Romeo is too strong. Lord Capulet is very dominant and harsh towards Juliet, while she wishes not to disappoint him, and is greatly effected by his sayings.
